About $488 is withheld from each fortnightly pay (PAYG), $12,688 over the year, against $12,331 actually due, so expect a refund of about $357 when you lodge your tax return; the $1,000 standard deduction is not part of PAYG withholding.

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours a week × 52. A 38-hour full-time week gives 1,976 paid hours a year, with paid annual leave included in the 52 weeks. The lowest rate in the table is the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 an hour from 1 July 2026 (see minimum wage).

Casual, overtime and penalty rates

Casual loading, overtime and weekend penalty rates are part of your pay and taxed with it, at the same rates as ordinary hours. Enter your average hourly rate including them if you want a yearly figure. A week with a lot of overtime will have more tax withheld, but your tax return settles the year as a whole.

The rate on the next dollar matters too: at $50.00 an hour full time you are in the 30% band, so an extra hour of overtime at the same rate leaves $34.00 after tax and Medicare levy.

FAQ

How many working hours are there in a year?

At 38 hours a week, 1,976 hours (38 × 52). At 40 hours, 2,080.

How much is $40.00 an hour a year?

$79,040 a year for 38 hours a week, or $63,547 after tax ($2,444.12 a fortnight).

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

No. Overtime is added to your income and taxed at your normal marginal rate. A big week can mean more tax is withheld from that pay, but your tax return works out the year as a whole.
