Pay rise calculator
A pay rise is taxed at your marginal rate, so you keep less than the headline figure. On $90,000, a 3.5% rise of $3,150 adds $2,142 a year to your take-home pay ($82.38 a fortnight) and $378 to your super.
How much of a $1,000 rise you keep
| Current salary | Extra take-home | Kept | With HELP |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $780 | 78.0% | $780 |
| $50,000 | $665 | 66.5% | $665 |
| $70,000 | $680 | 68.0% | $609 |
| $90,000 | $680 | 68.0% | $530 |
| $120,000 | $680 | 68.0% | $530 |
| $150,000 | $610 | 61.0% | $440 |
| $200,000 | $530 | 53.0% | $430 |
In the 30% band you keep 68% of a rise after the Medicare levy. Between $45,000 and $66,667 of taxable income you keep a little less, because the low income tax offset shrinks by 1.5% of each extra dollar. In the 37% band you keep 61%, and above $190,000 53%.
HELP and the surcharge
With a HELP debt, income over $69,528 also costs 15c per $1 (17c over $129,717), so a rise from $90,000 keeps $530 of each $1,000. Without private hospital cover, a rise that takes your income for surcharge purposes over $105,000 brings in the 1% surcharge on all of it: $1,050.01 at $105,001.
Don't forget super
Your employer pays 12% super on the new salary as well, so a $1,000 rise also adds $120 to your super each year.
FAQ
Can a pay rise leave me worse off?
Not through income tax, the Medicare levy or HELP: you always keep part of each extra dollar. The exception is the Medicare levy surcharge if you have no private hospital cover: crossing $105,000 adds 1% of your whole income. A rise can also reduce Centrelink payments.
Why is more tax taken from a bigger pay?
PAYG withholding treats each pay as if you earned that much every week or fortnight, so a pay with overtime or a bonus has more tax withheld. Your tax return evens it out over the year.
How much is a $5,000 pay rise after tax on $90,000?
$3,400 a year, or $130.77 a fortnight, plus $600 of extra super.
