With tax code 1257L you get £1,048 of tax-free pay each month and National Insurance starts at about £1,048 a month. A month with a bonus is taxed more heavily, but PAYE evens out income tax across the year; National Insurance does not.
FAQ
How is monthly tax worked out?
PAYE is cumulative: each month your employer compares your total pay so far this tax year with your total allowance so far, and deducts the tax due on the difference.
Why was I taxed more in my first month?
If your employer did not have your P45 they may have used an emergency code (1257L W1/M1), which taxes each month on its own. The overpayment is usually refunded once the right code arrives.
