Repayments are taken through payroll alongside tax, based on each pay period. If you earn more in one month (overtime or a bonus), you repay more that month even if your yearly income ends up under the threshold; you can ask for a refund afterwards.

Having two loans

If you have an undergraduate loan and a postgraduate loan you repay both at the same time: 9% over the undergraduate threshold plus 6% over £21,000. If you have two undergraduate plans, you repay 9% once, over the lower threshold.

When the loan is written off

Plan 2 loans are cancelled 30 years after the April you were first due to repay, Plan 5 loans after 40 years, and Plan 1 and Plan 4 loans after 25 or 30 years depending on when you borrowed. Anything left unpaid is not passed on.

FAQ

Which student loan plan am I on?

Plan 1 if you started in England or Wales before September 2012 or studied in Northern Ireland; Plan 2 if you started in England or Wales between September 2012 and July 2023; Plan 4 if your loan came from SAAS in Scotland; Plan 5 if you started in England from August 2023.

Is the repayment based on salary before or after tax?

Before tax. It is 9% (or 6%) of gross pay above the threshold. Salary sacrifice pension contributions reduce the pay it is based on.

Do I repay if I earn under the threshold?

No. Nothing is taken in a pay period where your pay is below the weekly or monthly share of the threshold.
