Who can get it

  • New Zealand tax residents with income from $24,000 to $69,999 for the tax year.
  • Not if you or your partner get Working for Families, an income-tested benefit, NZ Superannuation or a Veteran's Pension. This is assessed month by month.

How to claim

Ask your employer to use tax code ME (or ME SL with a student loan) and you get $10 a week less PAYE. Otherwise Inland Revenue works it out at the end of the tax year and refunds it. Use ME only if you expect your income for the whole year to stay under $70,000; if you go over, the credit you received has to be paid back.

The abatement

Between $66,000 and $70,000 the credit falls by 13c for every extra dollar. On top of the 30% tax rate and the 1.75% ACC levy, that makes your marginal rate 44.8% in this band before KiwiSaver.
