Who gets which rate

The adult rate applies from age 20. Younger workers can be paid a percentage of it: 90% (€12.74) aged 19, 80% (€11.32) aged 18, 70% (€9.91) under 18. The rates are per hour worked, so an employer can't average them over a long week and a short one.

Board and lodgings

If your employer provides food or accommodation, part of its value can count towards the minimum wage, up to €1.27 an hour for full board and €33.42 a week (or €4.77 a day) for lodgings.

Tax on the minimum wage

A full-time minimum wage of €28,696 is above the point where a single person's tax credits run out (€20,000), so some income tax is due: €1,739 a year, plus €394 USC and €1,216 PRSI. That leaves €25,347, or €12.50 for every hour worked.

The minimum wage in 2027

The Low Pay Commission recommended €14.94 an hour from 1 January 2027, and Budget 2027 included the 79-cent rise. The government also dropped the 2029 timeline for moving to a living wage. The order setting the new rate had not been published when we checked, and no new youth rates had been announced. Full time, €14.94 would mean €30,298 a year and about €514.11 a week take-home under the announced 2027 tax changes.
