Tax credits
Newfoundland and Labrador's basic personal amount for 2026 is $13,094. Like every provincial credit it is worth the lowest rate, 8.7%, so it cuts Newfoundland and Labrador tax by $1,139.18. Base CPP contributions and EI premiums earn the same 8.7% credit. Federally you get $16,452 at 14%, plus the $1,501 Canada employment amount.
The 2026 basic personal amount
Newfoundland and Labrador's Budget 2026 (29 April) raised the basic personal amount, backdated to 1 January. For your 2026 return it is $13,094, up from the $11,188 in the January payroll tables. The budget aim is no provincial tax on the first $15,000, and payroll has used $15,000 since the first pay in July so the year evens out; the annual figure works out as half a year at each amount.
On a bi-weekly cheque the July change cut NL tax by about $12.76 a pay. You do not need to file a new TD1NL form for it.
Eight brackets
Newfoundland and Labrador has more brackets than any other province: from 8.7% up to $44,678 to 21.8% over $1,141,275. Combined with federal tax the top rate is 54.80%.
Newfoundland and Labrador also has a low-income tax reduction. Its 2026 figures had not been published when we checked (the 2026 provincial forms were not out), so the calculator leaves it out. It only matters for incomes below roughly $25,000 to $40,000, where your actual Newfoundland and Labrador tax may be lower than shown.
Worked example: $75,000 in Newfoundland and Labrador
- CPP: 5.95% of earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 is $4,230.45, plus $16 of CPP2. EI: 1.63% of insurable earnings is $1,123.07.
- Taxable income: the enhanced CPP ($711) and CPP2 ($16) are deducted, leaving $74,273.
- Federal tax: the brackets give $11,421.97. Credits of $22,595.52 (basic personal amount $16,452, Canada employment amount $1,501, base CPP $3,519.45, EI $1,123.07) × 14% = $3,163.37, so basic federal tax is $8,258.60.
- Newfoundland and Labrador tax: the brackets give $8,178.26. Credits of $17,736.52 (basic personal amount $13,094, base CPP and EI) × 8.7% = $1,543.08, leaving $6,635.18. Newfoundland and Labrador tax is $6,635.18.
- Take-home: $75,000 − $8,258.60 − $6,635.18 − $4,246.45 − $1,123.07 = $54,736.70, or $4,561.39 a month and $2,105.26 every two weeks.
